About OBie Mavuso?
OBie Mavuso is a 24-year-old filmmaker/musician who calls herself a “hip-hop soul singer" from King William's Town in the Eastern Cape. She started making music in 2009 after an old friend that just moved to East London from Cape Town noticed her at some University events. She then mustered the courage to finally break her mic-ginity at a Talamanca Music Lounge at an event hosted by Nomsa Mazwai called Brute Force.
Performances
Since then she has performed at various places around the Eastern Cape and Cape Town. Often mistaken as a rapper, She takes that as a compliment, since her sound is heavily influenced by Hip Hop.
Music video
What was the concept behind your music video?
The concept for the track’s visuals and she enlisted a team of City Varsity friends to help her shoot it. “The song was inspired by a woman I was dating at the time,” she said “The video tells the story visually. There is a lot of imagery that describes the state of the relationship before it dies down, such as the rose which signifies passion, and blood which signifies death or danger. My love dies in the end, and that signifies the death of our relationship.”
