Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award

South Africa’s freshest fashion face could be unearthed at this year’s Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award, a fashion competition that showcases the very best in young emerging talent and culminates in a dazzling show at the Vodacom Durban July.

Every year fashion students from Durban and KwaZulu-Natal are invited to submit a race day design that encapsulates the fashion theme whilst still encompassing the stylish spirit of the biggest horse racing event in Africa.

Steered by the 2015 Vodacom Durban July fashion theme, “The Captain’s Table”, designs have to reflect the true meaning of the theme, a chance to dine with the Captain of the ship and impress him with their dazzling fashion sense. Above all, students have been strongly advised to carefully navigate around the nautical theme.

“The popular competition has seen a lot of support from the local fashion colleges and in previous years the judges have witnessed plenty of thought go into the students’ garments,” explained Tiffany Prior, Fashion Programme Director of the Vodacom Durban July. Past competitions have launched countless designers’ fashion careers with winners often returning to the race as invited designers.

The aspiring designers will be judged on their completed work by a panel of five fashion experts, including a representative from Golden Circle, who all understand exactly what the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award is searching for. Designs must follow the fashion theme of “The Captain’s Table,” be guided by upcoming trends, beautifully executed and be ready for a stylish day at the races.

Prior added, “The brief is exceptionally explicit and very tight and the judges have laid out exactly what we expect from students. In saying this, I’m always thrilled with our top ten young designers and I expect only the best from the 2015 competition!”

After the initial judging on May 28 the top twenty five semi finalists will be hand-picked to participate in a range of exciting Vodacom Durban July fashion shows including the ever so posh Cheese & Wine Evening and the early morning gallops. The final top ten designers will be selected for a final race day judging and showing and their chance of winning the grand prize of R10 000.

The 2015 Vodacom Durban July takes place at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday 4 July. More information can be found at www.vodacomdurbanjuly.co.za
