World-famous flame-grilled WHOPPER® sandwich has Capetonians queuing

One of the world’s largest hamburger chains, BURGER KING®’s(NYSE: BKW) opened its doors in Cape Town, South Africa today. The flagship store at 33-On-Heerengracht, opened to fanfare and surprise as the first 1000 free WHOPPER® sandwiches were served by local celebrities including Mayor Patricia de Lille, comedian Marc Lottering, soccer player Matthew Booth and many more.

Passers-by were entertained with live performances on the square by Crazy White Boy, Chad Saaimon, Jimmy Nevis and Jack Parow to add to the festivities as people enjoyed the signature WHOPPER® sandwich that has made BURGER KING® a favourite around the globe.

City Mayor Patricia de Lille said the city was honoured that BURGER KING® had opted to launch its South African offering here, adding it would provide a welcome boost to the city’s economy.

The launch in South Africa forms part of BKW’s aggressive expansion into high-growth emerging markets. The chain, which was founded in 1954 in Miami, opened in Russia and China last year and in Brazil in 2011. South Africa will also serve as the launch pad for BKW into the rest of sub-Saharan Africa.
