HEALTH: At the heart of South African students’ poor nutrition

Studies among university students in developing countries show high prevalence of obesity among South African students of between 10.8% and 24%. This rise is putting our students at increased risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease over their lifetime.
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa, cardiovascular disease is the second biggest killer in South Africa, after HIV/AIDS, despite 80% of cardiovascular disease being preventable by leading a healthy lifestyle.
“Many students do not realise the potentially serious effects of an unhealthy lifestyle, which is why education around a balanced diet needs to happen early on to avoid serious health risks,” says Lucy Jones, Marketing Head for Philips Consumer Lifestyle in Africa.
Philips started #CardiacConversations as a means to encourage hearty debates and discussions around the disheartening state of South Africa’s cardiac health.
“Through open dialogue we aim to educate South Africans about the importance of lifestyle changes and healthy food preparation as preventative measures against developing heart disease,” says Jones.
As a global leader in innovation around healthy food preparation, Philips has developed a range of innovative and easy-to-use kitchen appliances that can help students prepare healthier homemade food, despite inexperience in the kitchen or time constraints.
Two products designed to encourage healthier food preparation and improved ease of use are the Philips Avance Airfryer and Philips Avance Juicer.

“These products are developed to lessen the time and effort constraints that are often used as an excuse not to start the journey towards a healthier lifestyle, while guiding inexperienced cooks to produce nutritious meals,” says Jones.
The Philips Avance Airfryer XL
is single-handedly making air the new oil. This simple, yet effective appliance is a versatile addition to any student kitchen as it’s able to fry, grill, roast and bake wholesome foods using little to no oil.
The Philips Avance Airfryer was recently voted as Product of the Year in the Small Cooking Appliance category by the Consumer Survey of Innovation 2015 in South Africa, testament to the success of the technological innovation in the product.
“The Avance Airfryer removes up to 80% of the oil that you would have otherwise consumed, offering a real solution to the wellbeing of our students,” added Jones. “It also offers quicker cooking times, an all-in-one solution, and is easy to clean – making the transition to a healthier lifestyle as manageable as possible.”
Unhealthy lifestyle patterns formed during student years are likely to be sustained into adulthood, which is why healthy cooking alternatives need to be adapted to reduce health risks early on.
The second product, the Philips Avance Juicer,
has been designed to extract 10% more juice from the fresh ingredients and depending on the type of fruit or vegetables one juices, it is possible to make up to 2.5 litres of juice in one go without the need to empty the pulp container.

Jess van der Waal, Brand Manager of well i am, South Africa’s one-of-a-kind wellness challenge supported by Philips, advocates juices as a healthy option for students. “Vegetable juices are a great way to get in your recommended servings of fresh produce, especially if you have a hard time fitting in loads of broccoli, kale or cucumbers in your everyday diet,” says Van der Waal.
Students often snack during the day, rather than eating substantial meals, which makes nutrient-dense juice blends ideal for meeting students’ dietary needs, whether that is to provide energy, focus or a vitamin boost during the busy time,” Van der Waal explains. “Juices are low in calories, high in vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, and raw, which offers maximum nutritional gain, while offering a healthy alternative to popular unhealthy snacks.”
“The Philips Avance Juicer is perfectly designed for the busy student life,” says Jones. “The majority of fruit and vegetables do not require peeling or chopping before juicing and it features QuickClean technology, which minimises prepping and cleaning – freeing up valuable time.”
“Philips is passionate about the discussions around cardiac wellness and will continue to develop products and encourage important discussions like the #CardiacConversations, to assist consumers on this health journey,” concluded Jones.
