INTERVIEW: A GUIDED VERSION OF BONGANI GXEKWA

About me
Tell us about yourself, where you from and what do you do?
I was born in PE and my mom relocated to Peddie when I was 12, but I continued with my schooling mostly in the friendly and windy city J. I then moved to Johannesburg in 2006 and now I’m in the PR industry.

School

You studied Polymer Chemistry but opted for a career in PR, what made you make that dramatic change and how did your family deal with that?
Actually, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study after my matric year. I think at the time I was capable of doing anything but I was blessed (and studied hard) to earn a scholarship to study Polymer Chemistry. Having worked in the field more than 5 years, it got to a point where I no longer loved what I was doing. That, and other influences, led me to leave my job and I did some soul-searching for a few months until I decided that I would pursue a career in PR. My family wasn’t sure of my choices at first, but they’ve been supportive and they can now see how much I love what I do!

What’s the greatest lesson you learned so far in PR?
Be proactive and professional at all times. Not everyone is your friend and everyone is going to like what you do.  Just be strong-willed and stick to your lane.

Food

Can you cook? LOL…I try but I can safely say that I’m not the worst cook! And what are some of your favourite food to cook? Anything that’s simple yet delish. I’m the master of scrambled eggs!
What’s your favourite guilty pleasure food that you can’t help but munch on? Anything meaty! And if it has some bones…the better.
Favourite restaurant and favourite meal from that restaurant? I don’t think I have a favourite, hey. I like to try different things and if the food tastes good, I’ll definitely go back to that establishment.

Money

What’s the one unnecessary expenditure you once did and still regret today? Maxing my credit card within a month or so by blowing it on clothes and a nice time. I was young, okay. hehehe
What’s the one financial advice you have learned so far, that you still apply even today? Can I mention two? Discipline and planning! Putting everything on paper - Needs vs wants. I’m bad at personal budgeting, but I’ve learnt (and still learning) from the exercise. There’s nothing worse than being impulsive.

Dating
Current relationship status? Single. Anyone want to play cupid?
The biggest lesson you learned from dating? Not jumping too quickly into relationships. Get to know the person you’re dating and treat them the same way you’d like to be treated. Don’t change any of your values for another person - just be yourself and have fun!
Your celebrity crush? YHO! I can’t LOL… Trying to avoid any #AwkwardMoment when I see them  in case they read this J

Fashion

How would you describe your current fashion sense? Smart casual.A gentleman can never go wrong in a pair of jeans, a shirt or t-shirt, nice fitting jacket and a great-looking shoe.  It makes my life so much easy as I can rock the look to work, client meetings as well as at events.

5 fashion items you can’t live without? Right now: A coat,  my Wrangler denims, scarves, smart shirt  and of course, sunglasses.
Which celebrity would you love to raid their closet? Definitely Janez’s. He’s got the look that’s easy-going. When it comes to a more classy look, I’d love to raid Masego’s closet. Dude’s got great tailored suits.

Do you follow trends? Depends on what the trend is. I would never do braids or have hair extensions. I follow trends that I know complement my look and personality. And what was the weirdest trend that you followed and now when you look back it was totally ridiculous? I wouldn’t say that colouring one’s hair is weird but when some of my high school friends dyed their hair, I did the same and dyed my hair blue with hairspray. Let’s just say that didn’t work out well when we went swimming.
My favourite cologne?  I’ve always been a fan of Carolina Herrera so yeah, 212 Cologne for Men is still my favourite.

Music

Name five of your favourite artists? Simphiwe Dana, Thandiswa Mazwai, The Muffinz, Erikah Badu, Enya.
If you were a musician which genre would you perform? That’s a tricky one ‘coz there are certain elements I love from each of the genres. Therefore I’d choose a sound that incorporates those elements. I wouldn’t know the genre it would fall under, just as long as I would be exploring my creativity and artistry.
Artists who you feel should just retire? Artists that no longer have the passion for their craft and are just doing things just for the sake of making a quick buck.

Fun

What do you normally do to kill time over the weekend? I’m obsessed with series. I’ve just started watching Game of Thrones again from Season 1. But if I’m not doing that, I’d be out and about catching up with friends.
If you could get an opportunity to go hard-core drinking with any celebrity, who would it be and why? Definitely Somizi! What more is there to say – he’s carefree, funny, FUN…he’s just SOMIZI.
Your five favourite hangouts in JHB? Maboneng, Neighbourgoods, Rocomamas, Tashas and 44 on Stanley.

Complete the following sentence
If I won a million rand I would…….. (don’t bore my readers with some I will save tip) LOL… a million is not enough but I’d see if I can’t buy myself a home. Other than that I’d settle my debt and travel with the rest. ‘Twill be “Gone in 60 seconds” hehehe
I am a future legend because……..I’m great at what I do!
If my house had burn down and I had to save only 5 items I would save ……my phone, laptop, photos, my favourite coat and brogues.  If people count as items – that too. hehehe
If I went to the doctor and they told me I am dying in two weeks, this is what I’ll do…… take as many selfies as possible with everyone I love. That way I will leave them with a very recent memory with me.

My hangover secret is…..OROS!!! Definitely Oros.
My favourite childhood game…  Hide-and-seek.
Growing up in Eastern Cape is like….growing up in a cocoon, “safe” environment. Although times have changed and our kids are exposed to more, back in the days it was safer to bring your kids up in the EC compared to Gauteng, Johannesburg to be specific.

On the spot
Batman or superman? Superman
Vodka or tequila? Vodka
Bonang or Pearl Thusi? Not fair! I love them both.
Braamfontein or Maboneng? Maboneng!
Casper or Aka? Casper
