INTERVIEW: NOMZAMO MBATHA

In June, TRACE Sports Stars celebrates World Music Day by cranking up the volume to an epic line-up of programmes dedicated to music in all of its monumental and boundless glory, with the ever-so-exuberant actress Nomzamo Mbatha guiding viewers through a selection of shows as host of “A World of Music” Month. Tune into TRACE Sport Stars on DStv, channel 188, every Friday night from 9PM to witness Miss Mbatha convey the sheer majesty of music. 

As a star of the popular soapie isiBaya, Nomzamo has proven that she can hold her own amongst the very best in seasoned actors, as well as project her undeniably dynamic acting chops onto the big screen with her highly anticipated rom-com ‘Tell Me Sweet Something’, directed by Akin Omotoso. 

THE GUIDE: Whos Nomza Mbatha as an actor, can we get a bit of background on your TV career?

Nomzamo Mbatha: My first break in the industry came when I became a finalist on the MTV Base VJ Search in 2012, I was then discovered by a production company to star in a soapie called Isibaya. From then on I have starred in a drama series, Umlilo and recently shot a movie called Tell Me Sweet Something, due out 18 September 

TG: Who had the most influence on your career?

NM: My own intuition

TG: Have you always wanted to be an actress? 

NM: Not really. It is a love that I discovered along the way.

TG: Which role/character would you like to play in future?

NM: The role of a woman. That would be fun. However if I got the opportunity to play Queen Nandi, my life would be made!

TG: How would people in your inner circle/family describe you?

NM: They would say I laugh too much, and that I’m too kind for my own good.

TG: Where would you like your acting career to go? What are your long term goals in acting or otherwise?

NM: I would love to work on more international stuff but more so produce and direct films.

TG: What was the hardest lesson the media industry has taught Nomzamo?

NM: That the media will build you up only to try and break you (down) eventually. 

TG: Most memorable experience and embarrassing moment in your acting career?

NM: Memorable.. Kicking ass in scenes.
Embarrassing.. Haven’t had that so far.

TG: Is Nomzamo a musical person, which one are you a fanatic or encyclopaedia?

NM: I’m very musical. Definitely Encyclopaedia

TG. You recently hosted a show called Holiday swap? How was it? And what is your 
Favourite holiday destination? 

NM: It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Truly life-changing. I would love to go to Bora Bora

TG: Did you play any sports when growing up? And do you currently play any sports?

NM: I never played any sports. I was an academic.

TG: What’s the one sport you wouldn't mind trying out?

Synchronised swimming

TG: Which sport would you like to see more women partake in?

NM: Rugby

TG: Which has been your favourite character that you have performed?

NM: Umlilo- Khwezi

TG: Who is your favourite actor or actress? 

NM: Meryl Streep. She is sheer brilliance

TG: With such a busy schedule how do you manage to stay in great shape? What is your Secret please do share with us?
NM: I’m obsessed with Pilates. It does a body good!!!

TG: On a personal note, as your philanthropic work is visible, and juggled between your hectic schedules. What motivates it?

Growing up with not much and going through life wanting to save the world. I share a deep connection with those who lack. So I put pressure on myself to do the most that I can.

TG: Are you working on any current projects?

NM: Yes. Trace Sports Stars, every Friday 9PM. Isibaya on Mzansi Magic, everyday 8:30PM,

TG: Anything in the immediate future we could except besides presenting?

NM: A BIG international campaign due to be announced soon
