INTERVIEW: LERATO LEFAFA

Did this interview a while back WITH Lerato Lefafa shes an event specialist, the publicist for back to the city hip hop festival, dance to your rhythm and SA hip hop awards. Get to know her better..

1.       What made you study Corporate Communication and was it the initial course you wanted to study?  I had planned on taking up a degree in BCom (Economics and Econometrics), but then opted for Corporate Communication as it would allow me to handle a wide range of creative services.

2.       Describe yourself in 3 words? Success-driven, witty and straightforward

3.       You’ve worked on many events which one has been your favorite that you have worked on so far? Back To The City Freedom Day Festival, it takes place annually and it is the one day where all types of people come together to celebrate one cause:  Expression of freedom through the various elements of Hip Hop. This is one event that will continue to be talked about and passed along socially for a very long time.

4.       You were part of the team who were behind the SA hip hop awards, what was that like working on that project and how did you deal with all the negative publicity surrounding the event?  Great risks were involved in organising the 1st ever SA Hip Hop awards, as we did not know what to anticipate. Nevertheless, a positive attitude was maintained and all available resources were used to ensure a successful turnout.

5.       What is a normal day like for Lerato?  An average day for me is about twelve hours. Late nights and early mornings are the story of my life. There is always something to do, as every day brings new opportunities to grow, learn, discuss ideas etc.  A normal day consists of a lot of research, writing, talking over the phone, monitoring and internal/external meetings. Balance is found during gym sessions.

6.       Which event are you currently busy with at the moment?  The biggest Hip Hop gathering in Africa is back: Back To The City Freedom Day Festival| 27 April 2014| Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, Johannesburg. I am excited, anxious, happy, nervous, stressed and giddy about it all, because we are expanding this year. Bigger and better things!

7.       Where do you see yourself in the next five years and what’s next for Lerato?  5 year plan: Having mental, physical, financial and emotional stability. I am an endless challenge seeker, so expansion on all fronts, is the next exciting thing.

8.       Any advice for the students who want to pursue a career in communication and event management?  There are plenty of opportunities out there for communicators, whether you want to be an events coordinator, TV news reporter, talk show host, public relations officer, publications editor, marketing communication manager, director of corporate communication, creative director, copywriter, film director, journalist, scriptwriter, reporter or an entertainer, JUST GO FOR IT.
