Exclusive Tasting with Brian Nation – The Jameson Single Pot Stills of Midelton

On Tuesday, 08 November 2016, I donned my finest white shirt and some pants to attend the exclusive whiskey tasting and dinner pairing hosted by Brian Nation – Head distiller of Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Brian Nation traveled from Ireland to South Africa to host the impressive tasting and he will also be present at these years Whiskey from 9-11 November 2016.

Brian Nation

The dinner was strictly an invite only do held at the swanky Saxon hotel and Spa at Hyde Park. The culinary experience consisted of a 5-star meal each carefully paired with its own whiskey that brought out the real flavour of the dish while being educated by Brain on the heritage of the specific whiskey.

The Entrée
Scallop, Cauliflower, and Mandarin

Seared scallops, naartjie salt, warm chorizo and sherry salsa, orange and fennel paired with Midleton Barry Crockett.

The starter was beautifully done and it paired very well with the Midleton Barry Crockett whiskey. People know that I am a big seafood fan and seeing that delicious scallop paired with the citrus flavour was just perfectly balanced.

The starter was just perfect and it really put a big smile on my face and stomach. That was one of the highlights of the night. I won’t lie I cleaned out my plate.

The Main
Duck, parsnip, fig and raisin

Confit leg and smoked breast of duck, parsnip puree, puffed buckwheat, fig and raisin chutney, coffee reduction paired with the Redbreast 12-year-old.

The main was also delicious, it was my first time trying out duck meat and I must say I am now a big fan.

The redbreast whiskey enhanced the flavour of the fig and duck.I loved the perfect balance of sweet and savory.

The dessert
Pear, vanilla, and caramel

Layered pear and almond tart, caramel ice-cream, whipped vanilla ganache paired with the yellow spot whiskey

The dessert OMG, that’s all I have to say, I was left speechless, there is no way to describe how delicious the dessert.

All in all, it was a legendary night, good food accompanied great conversation.
