INTERVIEW: FANG DARYTHM AND EDSOUL THE BEST OF SOULFUL HOUSE

BY BONGANI MASOMBUKA

So this week we were up close and personal with the multi-talented Kaya FM duo DJ’s @FangDaRhythm and @EdsoulSA who host the @Rhythmsessions where they showcase and play the past, present and future the best in house music on Kaya FM every Friday at  19:00 till 20:00 pm.

Had a chat and Q and A with the duo to find out more about how they view the radio industry and music and how they journey has been thus far, here’s what they had to say:

  • How did the both of you meet and what inspired you guys to take on this career path, why music?
We met in high school,  started collecting music and decided to put the music to use. why music? Because music is.
  • There are so many talented DJ’s in South Africa, never mind the rest of the world, what makes you different from other DJ’s?
The music, the style of play, the DJ setup we prefer using, the fact that sound and lighting play a huge role in our DJ sets

  • How did the relationship with Kaya FM come about?
We started at Kaya FM as interns and rest is history
  • Do you feel like there are double standards when it comes to being a DJ, are female DJ’s given as much credit male DJ’s?
Double stands? No but it just so happens that there are more male DJs than female
  • What’s your preference? Playing at a club or in studio?
Club or in studio? Both because the approach is different for instance in a club you can’t be a jerk and play for yourself while people are not dancing and in the studio you play what you want and feel hoping that people won’t tune out.
  • How do you decide what you’re going to play every night?
Depends on the on the time and place they all different, for instance at the parties that we host we are able to dictate the music and take you on a musical journey the way we want and everybody will enjoy but at other places like Taboo for instance its more about everything else (life style) than the music

  • What is your perception on the growth of skill, creativity and talent in Mzansi’s music industry?
Growth of skill, creativity and talent? There is a lot of room for improvement but it will get there eventually
  • There was a time when the local music industry lacked “originality” for lack of a better word, and people felt that local artists were imitating the US. Do you feel that we have now come into our own and are embracing our own sound?
Yes, because when we went to the winter music conffrence in Miami we picked up that south african house music was celebrated more than international house music whereby before it was the other way around
  • What exciting things can we expect from the two of you in the last half of 2014?
Right now our focus is to build the Rhythm sessions brand through our Friday show on Kaya FM and through the parties that we will be hosting.
